As a verb strike means to hit forcibly and deliberately with your hand or something in it. (In baseball a strike really means a swing and a miss but we won’t muddy the water). As a noun a strike means a sudden attack, usually a military one. It also means a refusal to work as a form of protest, typically in an attempt to gain concessions from an employer. In baseball it’s three strikes and you’re out but outside of that sport there’s no limit to how many strikes could happen consecutively or concurrently. In the news we hear about the strike possibility with Canada Post postal workers and another one by Air Canada flight attendants. We’re told Canada Post has been bleeding so much money the past few years we could end up without our national postal service regardless of whether or not there’s a strike by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. In the case of the flight attendants, one of the things they want is what they call an end to the abuse of unpaid work. Apparently, they are currently paid from the moment the boarding door closes until it opens upon landing, while before, during and after their flights they are required to perform mandatory unpaid duties including boarding, deplaning, safety checks, and assisting passengers with special needs. They want to be paid from the moment pre-boarding duties begin. Like anyone who has flown multiple times I see what flight attendants have to do and that doesn’t sound unreasonable. Hopefully Air Canada and Canada Post will be able to come to terms with the unions, and we won’t have to be dealing with no mail delivery and cancelled flights.
