Last year Saskatchewan RCMP dealt with the most fatalities on rural roads that they have seen in six years. In 2024 officers at Saskatchewan detachments responded to 77 fatal collisions that resulted in 88 deaths.
More people were seriously injured from collisions, too. There were 271 collisions involving serious injuries in 2024, up 43 per cent from the previous year. These collisions resulted in 321 people seriously injured, up 48 per cent from the previous year.
The RCMP says the four primary factors in these collisions included impaired driving, distracted driving, dangerous driving behavior like speeding and failure to use a seatbelt.
Other statistics of note include male driver being more likely to be at fault in both serious and fatal collisions and whatever your gender, the age group at highest risk of being involved in a fatal and/or serious collision is those aged 16 to 25.
More than 60 per cent of collisions in RCMP jurisdiction happened between noon and midnight.
And 2025 doesn’t seem to be faring much better. The RCMP say to date, there have been 51 fatal collisions and 54 deaths which is 13 more lives lost than there were last year at the same time. Nearly 40 per cent of these deaths were related to someone not wearing their seatbelt.
