SGI Traffic Safety Spotlight will focus on intersections this month. Approximately, thirty-seven percent of collisions occur at intersections in Saskatchewan. SGI says yielding the right of way and taking care at intersections is key to avoiding collisions. To do so correctly, you need to give driving your full attention.

Intersections make up a large percentage of collisions and Heather Hubic, Manager for SGI Media Relations says, “They are very dynamic places with a lot happening, and the likelihood of a collision happening is high, so keeping your full attention, just keep your eyes peeled and scan the road ahead to stay aware of your surroundings. This will help you react quickly so you can avoid those collisions, and really you can just create a safer driving environment for everyone.”

Some tips to navigate intersections safely include: looking both ways before entering any intersection. Come to a complete stop before the crosswalk at stop signs and when turning right at a red light, where it is allowed. Make sure oncoming traffic has cleared and there are no pedestrians before turning left at a green light. Anticipate the traffic light changing to avoid running an amber or red light. Always approach uncontrolled intersections cautiously and yield to the right. Slow down and yield to traffic already in the circle when entering a roundabout and watch for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists at intersections.

Ignoring traffic signals and unsafe driving can result in a $230 fine and 4 demerits. The basic right-of-way rules are explained in the Saskatchewan Driver’s Handbook and apply to drivers of all vehicles.
