Premier Scott Moe highlighted a post from the ‘Food Professor’ on social media today, about dropping the interprovincial trade barriers to lessen the impact of trade uncertainties with the U.S. Sylvain Charlebois from Dalhousie University in Halifax monitors grocery store and food production trends.
The Food Professor’s post says, “My home in Nova Scotia is heated with Saudi oil since I can’t get oil from Alberta, a province that sends Nova Scotia $2 billion in equalization payments because we’re considered a “poor” province.” He says these barriers hurt our economy every day. He also points out that Quebec, the province that is blocking the pipeline, receives $14 billion in equalization payments.
Premier Moe calls Charlebois’ post a great example of the need to remove interprovincial trade barriers, which would contribute to job growth, economic security and energy independence. Charlebois’ post links to a CJWW ag news story that he was interviewed for about reducing trade barriers. The story is below.
