If a trip to ‘The Happiest Place on Earth’ just isn’t in the budget this year, the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra is bringing the world of Disney magic to you.
Stephanie Unverricht is a principal bassoonist with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. She says the SSO’s upcoming performance, ‘Disney in Concert: Once Upon a Time’, will aim to captivate audience members of all ages with classic songs from The Lion King and The Little Mermaid, as well as new favourites from Encanto and Moana, to name a few.
“It’s a really fun, immersive experience. We go through a whole bunch of different movies, and without having to watch the entire movie, we get the highlights of all the best stuff,” she explains.
She adds that there will be between 50 and 60 musicians on stage, making for a full orchestra, alongside several singers and possibly a screen playing movie clips in the background as the music plays.
“We did one (a show) similar to this maybe ten years ago, and it made me want to quit my job as a bassoonist and become a full-time Disney princess because it was so inspiring.”
She adds that you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy a Disney movie. “Getting my son, who’s three-and-a-half, into these, it’s really fun to experience them together. They really are great movies,” she admits.
The show takes place this Saturday evening at TCU Place. Tickets can be purchased at saskatoonsymphony.org.
