The Muskeg Lake Cree Nation’s third urban reserve in Saskatoon is located at 125 Aspen Place, adjacent to its first urban reserve established in Sutherland in 1988. That urban reserve is currently home to 50 businesses with more than 750 employees.
A special signing ceremony was held Wednesday between Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark and Muskeg Lake Cree Nation Chief Kelly Wolfe.
Decisions on urban reserve designations are made by the federal government. Once that happens, it will become the eleventh urban reserve in Saskatoon . Muskeg Lake’s other urban reserve is the Creeway West Petro Canada on 22nd Street West.
When a property transfers to reserve status, it is no longer under City jurisdiction. The signing fulfills the municipal requirements for urban reserve designation. This includes:
- municipal and police services the City will provide;
- service fees Muskeg Lake Cree Nation will pay the City in lieu of property taxes; and,
- compatible land-use and development standards.
The Muskeg Lake Cree Nation is located about an hour north of the city and is bordered by the towns of Marcelin, Leask and Blaine Lake. It has about 2,500 members, with approximately 450 residing on the home reserve.
