A treatment centre which includes six family suites with two bedrooms and two individual suites, as well as a cultural room has opened on Wahpeton Dakota Nation, northwest of Prince Albert.
A news release from Indigenous Services Canada and Wahpeton explains that the new Adult and Family Treatment Centre focuses on holistic substance use treatment.
Counselling services support family wellness, cultural knowledge sharing, life skills development, education and awareness, and land-based therapeutic activities.
The facility includes two classrooms for continuing education and a multi-purpose room for physical activity, large group gatherings and programming.
Indigenous Services Canada provided $9.8 million for construction of the treatment centre.
Chief John Waditaka of Wahpeton Dakota Nation says, “The 7 sacred teachings will be guided by the Elders as each family begins to heal from their addictions.”
