It took 13 games into their franchise history, but the Saskatoon Berries have their first walk-off win!
Bryce Campbell’s base-hit drove in Ethan Menard with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Berries out-lasted the Moose Jaw Miller-Express 5-4 Sunday afternoon. Many in the crowd of 1,902 at Cairns Field were resigned to Saskatoon opening the first of four consecutive home games with a loss as the Berries trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. But, a pair of balks and a two-run single by catcher Dominc Archila allowed Saskatoon to force extra frames before Campbell’s heroics. Until the ninth inning, the Berries had left eight runners on base and only had five hits off Moose Jaw starting pitcher Declan O’Hare and reliever Julian Gonzalez. But, Saskatoon loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth off Gonzalez, then Miller-Express closer Takao Cookson balked before throwing a pitch to plate the first run, Archila singled to make it 4-3 and Cookson allowed another hit and hit a batter to load the bases again before balking for a second time when he dropped the ball while standing on the pitching rubber before a delivery. Cookson avoided giving up the winning run in the ninth and 10th innings as Saskatoon loaded the bases, but Campbell came through off Ty Thomson, the fourth Moose Jaw pitcher, as the lead-off hitter in the 11th with automatic runner Menard on second. The beneficiary of the rally was Carter Kopp, the fourth Berries’ pitcher of the day, who threw four-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits and striking out five, for the victory. Saskatoon improved to 5-8 and will welcome the Swift Current 57s to Cairns Field Monday evening at 7 o’clock. Following are Les Lazaruk’s post-game interviews with Berries’ head coach Joe Carnahan, Kopp and Campbell plus the boxscore and game information…..
