As the province moves closer to implementing nuclear technology, a nuclear safety expert has been appointed to SaskPower’s board of directors.
Former President and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Rumina Velshi, has forty years of experience in nuclear energy development.
Velshi says she is “honoured to be part of the SaskPower Board of Directors which is leading the Crown Corporation’s efforts in advancing SMR (small modular reactor) development in Saskatchewan.” Velshi has been appointed for a two-year term that began on May 1st.
In 2019, Saskatchewan signed an MOU to advance Small Modular Reactors in Canada.
A final decision on whether to build a SMR in Saskatchewan won’t happen until 2029 after a number of regulatory measures and assessments are made. This includes site evaluations and public consultation, with the first SMR in this province possibly by 2032.
