We normally take our bottles and cans to Sarcan after we’ve managed to fill a few bags. The other day the doorbell rang and when I opened it there was a young Scout standing there resplendent in uniform along with his dad collecting, you guessed it, bottles and cans. So, I opened up the garage and gave them what I had because I have a soft spot in my heart for Scouts having been one when I was a boy. I still have my green shirt with its badges and insignia. Shirt doesn’t fit any more. Must have shrunk hanging there in the closet……(cough). I was a Wolf Cub before becoming a Scout. I remember the Cub pack was fashioned after the Jungle Book with our adult leader being Akela assisted by Baloo and Bagheera. Back then there were Cubs and Scouts, Brownies and Guides. Today in the Scouting movement some designations, ages and names have changed. I believe my Wolf Cub Promise was, “I promise to do my best, to do my duty to God and the Queen, to keep the Law of the Wolf Cub pack, and to do a good turn to somebody every day”. The Scout Promise was similar,” On my honour, I promise that I will do my best, to do my duty to God and the Queen, to help other people at all times, and to obey the Scout Law”. Right now, Scouts Canada is focused on a commitment to reach out and include historically marginalized communities and to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Reconciliation. It’s nice to see Scouting is still here and adapting to changing times and we wish them well.
