April 22nd, Earth Day, is an annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
This year’s theme is “Planet versus Plastics”. Earth Day was first held in 1970, 54 years ago. The theme that first year was “Give Earth A Chance”. Here we are more than 5 decades later and what are we doing to try and save the planet for future generations? We have woken up to the health risks posed by plastic pollution and that’s a positive. A negative would be we haven’t figured out how to cut carbon emissions. It seems we know it should be done but all we do is argue about how to get it done. Politics and money get in the way of solutions. Then there’s Climate Change. I don’t remember that subject being a hot topic of discussion in the early 1970’s but it sure is in the 2020’s. Planet earth itself helped along with Mother Nature has been showing ominous signs of things to come in the way of droughts, floods, storms, earthquakes, warming temperatures, and toss in a Pandemic for good measure. I wish I had confidence that our politicians will smarten up and get with the program, but……. Let’s just think positive and have hope for the future here on Earth Day 2024. I should take this opportunity to pass along birthday wishes to our daughter as she was an Earth Day baby. Happy Birthday Michele and I really hope Planet Earth will be in good shape for you and your children on the Earth Day birthday that happens when you’re the age I am now.
