Coffeetalk, Monday April 15…..2002. You heard me right. April 15 22 years ago today was also a Monday. I talked about computer terminology which held a different meaning for baby boomers and beyond. For example, take mouse, which is a four-legged rodent, and a mouse pad is where the mouse lived. A byte was what you took out of a hamburger and a Ram was a male goat (or a type of truck). A hard drive was the road between Biggar and the Alberta border. A crash is what happens when you aren’t paying attention to your driving. The server was the person who brought you your meal in the restaurant. The keyboard was what was in front of you when you were taking your piano lesson. Laptop is where Santa has children sit to have their picture taken with him. The desktop was where your paperwork was done at the office. Your inbox and your outbox sat on your desktop piled high with paperwork. Spam was luncheon meat of questionable taste in a can. Sending mail required an envelope and a stamp. Boot is what you felt like doing to the car door when you’ve locked your keys inside. Floppy (this is 2002, remember) is a fish when dropped into the bottom of the boat. And memory is what you think you’re losing because you’re not as young as you used to be. This baby boomer’s memory ain’t what it used to be but on the other hand I’ve learned a lot more about computers in the last 22 years. For instance, some trash is gotten rid of by dumping in a container to be picked up by a truck, but other trash can be gotten rid of by pushing the delete button.
That’s Coffeetalk. I’m Vic Dubois.
