It’s my Parting Shot for my Monday Musings…..
It’s Masters week! Golf’s first major tournament has all its pomp and ceremony over the next few days – the champion’s dinner on Tuesday, the Par-3 tournament on Wednesday, the ceremonial opening tee shots very early Thursday morning and then the tournament proper from Thursday through Sunday. In the past, I’ve tried to play a round on a local course or two on Saturday and/or Sunday – then watch some of the action from Augusta in the clubhouse restaurant before heading home. That won’t happen this year because the local lay-outs have yet to open – and likely won’t until sometime next week, weather permitting!
I was very impressed with the class and awareness shown by Dawn Staley after the head coach of the U of South Carolina women’s basketball team took more than just a moment to salute Iowa star Caitlin Clark. Sure, Staley’s Gamecocks completed an undefeated season last night by beating Clark’s Hawkeyes by 12 points in the N-C-A-A women’s basketball final last night. But, Staley knows that the wall-to-wall coverage of women’s college hoops – almost unheard of and barely noticable a few short years ago – has occurred because of Caitlin Clark’s unprecedented assault on the N-C-A-A record book for scoring points, mostly with the use of three-point shots from – seemingly – all over the floor. And, not just the women’s basketball record book, but the men’s as well!
I will say it again, it’s sad that U-S college sports gets a lot more mainstream air time in Canada than does Canadian university sports. Of course, the reason is simple – Canadian networks can easily pick up American feeds for a nominal cost, compared to producing their own telecasts of the local product!
And, with Niklas Edin of Sweden winning his seventh World Men’s Championship yesterday, so ends the 2023-24 curling season! And, I don’t care what the Grand Slam calendar says is still scheduled – even if an event was being held in our listening area!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!…..
