Prime Minister Justin Trudeau believes Conservative politicians are misleading Canadians about the government’s carbon pricing program, or what others call the carbon tax. He says Conservative premiers would rather complain, attack and mislead Canadians for narrow political gain. His argument is that for eight out of ten Canadians, they get more money back in rebates than the carbon tax costs them, which Trudeau says the Parliamentary Budget Office agrees with.
Premier Scott Moe spoke at a House of Commons Committee meeting on Wednesday urging for the increase to be nixed or the tax to be nixed altogether and choosing another solution. Trudeau says alternatives have always been an option for provinces. “Any province that wants to put forward a similarly robust way to fight climate change, but do it in a way that works for them, is more than welcome to, and has been since the very beginning.” Trudeau adds that the solution needs to have the same level of ambition to be approved.
The tax is set to increase by 23 per cent on Monday.
