After being held on September 30th for two years in a row, the Rock Your Roots: Walk for Reconciliation will now take place on June 21st, National Indigenous People’s Day.
The change comes as residential school survivors expressed missing school buses full of children arrive to take part in the walk, which they are unable to do on September 30th, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, as schools are closed.
This year, the walk will begin with a Knowledge Keeper ceremony. Those taking part in the walk are asked to wear an orange or cultural shirt or carry signs that celebrate their heritage.
The walk will be led by residential school survivors, and singers, dancers, and musicians will celebrate the cultural diversity of Saskatoon along the way.
