A young First Nations child from a school in Coronach has been talking about self-harm after five years of bullying. That’s according to the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, who says the family came to the executive to ask for support. The family says the child has been racially targeted including the use of racial slurs and physical assaults by several other children.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron says all of the incidents were reported to the school, but the family feels the school hasn’t taken the bullying seriously, so it continues, despite a a zero-tolerance policy as stated on its website. He says First nation children have every right to be at school without abuse that impacts their mental health so much they consider self-harm.
The FSIN is asking the Coronach School and Prairie South School Division to immediately respond to the situation.
