The Canadian Federation of Independant Business is warning that small businesses are bound to struggle as a result of the federal government’s changes to international student visas.
At the end of January, a two-year cap was placed on international student visas, and changes were made around work permits for accompanying spouses.
CFIB President Dan Kelly says small businesses already grappling with labour shortages will feel the pinch, especially those in small, rural communities.
Kelly says the government is also suggesting an overhaul of its Temporary Foreign Workers program, which had a success rate of 52 per cent in addressing the labour needs of small businesses in 2021.
CFIB recommends that Ottawa holds public consultations on the recent announcements and any future potential changes.
