Say it ain’t so! My generation is no longer dominant in the country! Statistics Canada says millennials, born between 1981 and 1996, have surpassed the baby boomer generation, born between 1946 and 1965. Millennials rise in the ranks is mostly due to the recent arrival of immigrants. From the mid-60’s through the early 70’s boomers accounted for about 40% of our population and for 65 years remained the largest generation in the Canadian population. We’re now #2 behind millennials, generation Y. What happened to generation X you ask, those born between 1966-1980? They’re #4 as Stats Canada reports they were born during an era of declining fertility and will never have been the dominant generation in our country like baby boomers, millennials, and generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012, currently the 3rd largest generation and who could overtake millennials in numbers after 2038 according to population estimates. Having reached the end of the alphabet, we now have the alpha generation, those born from 2013 onward whose rise is mainly due to birth rather than immigration. For trivia buffs, more than 2/3’s of those age 65 and older are baby boomers. The remaining 3’rd are from the greatest generation, born prior to 1928, or the inter-war generation (a term I haven’t heard before), born between 1928 and 1945. Anyhow, I guess it’s time we boomers stopped strutting around as if we owned the place and made way for the younger generations. Maybe they can solve some of the problems we’ve created but can’t solve.
