“Ice roads connect the north to the rest of the province, so people can travel for work, school and medical appointments.” That, from Highways Minister, Lori Carr, with the announcement that the Wollaston Lake and Stony Rapids to Fond du Lac ice roads have opened for the winter season. Carr adds that these ice roads also permit the transport of critical supplies like food and fuel.
She thanks the workers who build and maintain these routes, explaining that the roads are built in partnership with northern First Nations, who provide workers and heavy machinery. The ice roads ensure overland access to several northern communities.
A government news release states that the unseasonably warm start to winter delayed the start of building the roads, but crews were assisted in recent weeks by colder weather in the north.
