This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. This week, I went down the rabbit hole of AI and deep fakes. I have to say I was shocked at how, at a glance, deep fakes generated by artificial intelligence can actually be. And very concerned.
If you’ve seen for instance Mark Zuckerberg saying he had total control of billions of people’s stolen data. Or Taylor Swift saying that due to a packaging error they can’t sell 3,000 Le Creuset cookware sets. So, she’s giving them away to loyal fans for free. And one of the most realistic being that of Morgan Freeman. Well, you’ve seen a deep fake.
Of course, there’s the whole series of Tik Tok videos dedicated to Deep fake Tom Cruise who is actually Miles Fisher. Fisher has managed to replicate Tom Cruise’s voice and mannerisms and then there is just a face swap using technology.
It’s impossible to conceive that this technology won’t be deployed in upcoming elections, for instance. And how in the world will the average person be able to determine that they are being duped by a deep fake? I think it may come back to – check your source. Is this coming from a reliable entity? Has that entity done its due diligence? I don’t know if I could spot a deep fake, but I know the days of “I’ll believe it when I see it” have come to an end.
