Increased use of Indigenous languages, an Indigenous recruitment plan, reduced funding barriers, and inclusion of Indigenous perspective are all initiatives that fall on Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s 2024-2029 Indigenous Student Success Strategy.
Sask. Polytech President Dr. Larry Rosia says the school has launched a plan like this every 5 years for the last 15 years, and he thinks it has contributed to the 7 per cent Indigenous student enrollment increase this fall.
The strategy will increase the use of Indigenous languages on campus, create an Indigenous recruitment plan, reduced funding barriers, and include Indigenous perspective in lesson plans. It will also work to increase Indigenous student representation and increase career counselling and employment services at all campuses.
“It (the strategy) was built through consultations. We engaged in consultations with students, employees, First Nations leaders and communities, as well as the Metis community,” Rosia explained.
He adds that this plan will not only welcome, inspire, and empower Indigenous students, but create a more highly skilled workforce in the province, as well.
The strategy is called Wichitowin achi kaskihtamasowin ati nikan, which is Michif for helping others with success.
