The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation’s last scheduled mini rally in North Battleford was accompanied by a group of about 1000 concerned parents, students and community members.
Outside Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill’s office, the group attempted to being awareness to the underfunding problem in Saskatchewan’s public education sector.
A release from the STF states that in 2022-2023, there was one social worker for every 2,588 students, and one speech language pathologist for every 1,413 students, while the number of children requiring intensive support grew. The release added that due to underfunding and budget cuts, the support that many students rely on is inaccessible.
“It must be very difficult for this government to continue pretending not to hear the profound concerns their constituents have about the crises in our publicly funded schools,” stated STF President Samantha Becotte.
Along with the first three rallies in Moose Jaw, Humboldt and Saskatoon, estimates place the number of supporters at 4,200 people.
