After spending two years designing and building a car out of carbon fibre hockey sticks and 3D printed PLA plastic, a group of students from Saskatchewan Polytechnic achieved 8th place in the Shell Eco-marathon World Championship.
Tyson Church, one of the students in the group, says the goal of the Shell Eco-marathon was to create a car that had the best fuel efficiency. The crew got to work on a light-weight car with an asymmetrical body for reduced drag and improved aerodynamics.
After winning first place at the Shell-Eco-marathon Americas Challenge in Indianapolis with the car, the team traveled to India where their design reached 214 kilometers per litre of gas, securing them in an eighth-place tie.
Church says although they tied, the other team in the tie was favoured and was able to move on to the final race. He says the crew had their sights set high but tying for 8th place at a World Championship event is a high achievement, and he would do it again in a heartbeat if given the opportunity.
