Backpacks with built-in radar and display systems will be worn by students at several Regina schools to remind drivers to obey school zone speed limits.
The City of Regina has partnered with CAA, Regina Police Service and the Public and Catholic School Divisions to raise awareness about safe speeds throughout the month of October.
Through the schools’ CAA Safety Patrol program, four student patrollers will wear backpacks that can determine a driver’s speed and display it, as well.
In a release, CAA Senior Communications Specialist Angel Blair says the top two risky behaviors performed by motorists in school zones are speeding and distracted driving. She adds that in April, two Regina schools observed over 515 motorist infractions including speeding, distracted driving, and other unsafe behaviors.
The initiative began in Quebec, and Regina is the first City in Saskatchewan to launch it.
