Friday, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources gave updates on the record-breaking wildfire season across the country.
Johnathan Wilkinson says this wildfire season has been historic, with more intense wildfires in more parts of the country than ever before.
Minister of Emergency Preparedness Harjit Sajjan says 2600 people remain evacuated across the country, many of whom have lost their homes.
On Friday, across the country there are 1138 wildfires burning, with 817 considered out of control. There have been over 5500 wildfires nationally this year, and about 3.4 million hectares have been burned.
That’s over six times the 10-year average. To try and counter the raging fires, the federal government announced that $400,000 will be provided to the International Association of Fire Fighters fund through the new training fund.
