The Saskatoon Food Bank has announced that they are extremely close to meeting their fundraising goal for the month-long Fresh Fruit for Kids Campaign.
At the start of the month, Canpotex began the campaign with a $50,00 donation, urging the public to match that amount in total. This program is designed to help feed kids that are no longer receiving school-provided meals now that it is summer. The food bank says they only need to raise $6,000 more from the public to reach $50,000.
There will be two more campaigns to follow this one. The second campaign will be aimed at collecting infant formula, and the third for collecting baby food, both products that are in great demand at the food bank. Canpotex will match all donations made by the public up to $50,000 for each campaign for the next three years, meaning a total donation of $450,000 from the company.
Deborah Hamp, Saskatoon Food Bank Director of Operations and Engagement, says 41 per cent of food bank users are under the age of 18. The food bank is seeing record visitor numbers, with around 24,000 people coming through the doors every month.
