The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team is investigating an in-custody death that occurred at the Pelican Narrows RCMP Detachment on Sunday.
At 4:00 p.m., SIRT received a notification from the Saskatchewan RCMP about a death in the detachment at Pelican Narrows, and an investigation took place.
The day before at 2:21am, Pelican Narrows RCMP encountered a 34-year-old man who was wanted in relation to an ongoing Break and Enter and Weapons investigation. The man was arrested and brought to the detachment where he was searched, lodged in cells, and remanded into custody to appear in court. The next day at 2:40pm, he went into medical distress inside his cell. First aid was provided, and EMS transported him to the Pelican Narrows Medical Centre where, 47 minutes later, he was pronounced deceased. The Saskatchewan Coroners Service has been notified and is conducting an investigation. This will include a post-mortem examination, toxicology and microscopy. During the course of SIRT’s investigation, an unknown white powder was found in the man’s cell and has been seized to be tested.
A final report will be issued to the public within 90 days of the end of the investigation.
