The Canadian Transportation Agency is launching consultations to strengthen air passenger protection, and Canadians are encouraged to share their opinions on the matter.

On Tuesday, the CTA released a document stating that it would introduce the Budget Implementation Act, which will make several changes to the Canada Transportation Act, and specifically the Air Passenger Protection Regulations. With the changes, the current three categories of flight disruptions will be eliminated. These were used to determine the compensation that passengers were entitled to.

This will make compensation mandatory for all disruptions, unless there are exceptional circumstances. The changes will also make standards of treatment mandatory for all flight disruptions. This includes the provision of food and water. The current process for resolving air travel complaints will also be replaced with a simplified method to ensure travelers get quicker decisions.

The consultation process will be open until August 10th. After reviewing the feedback from comments received, draft regulations will be published in Canada Gazette Part One.
