A young BC Wildfire Service firefighter has died while on the job near Revelstoke.
Thursday at 3:30pm, Revelstoke RCMP learned that a 19-year-old female firefighter was clearing brush in a remote area when a small fire started. The rest of her team had lost contact with her, and she had been caught under a fallen tree. First aid was commenced, and the victim was airlifted to Queen Victoria Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Her death is being investigated by RCMP, the BC Coroners Service, WorkSafeBC, and the BC Wildfire Service.
There are currently 365 active wildfires in British Columbia, with 227 out of control. Twenty-two fires have broken out in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile in Saskatchewan, we have 30 wildfires with only 2 out of control.
