Monday morning gas prices in Saskatoon are up more than five cents a litre as compared to last week. While prices surged in some Saskatchewan communities by as much as 10 cents a litre on the weekend, according to Gasbuddy.com, the price of regular unleaded, at an average price of 157.8 cents a litre in Saskatoon, is actually down 47.4 cents from this time last year.
Meanwhile, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says a second carbon tax takes effect on Canada Day, but they say the Trudeau government buried the tax in fuel regulations that require producers to reduce the carbon content in their fuels. However, if companies can’t meet the requirements the CTF says they will be forced to buy credits and those costs will be passed onto consumers through higher pump price.
The CTF points to a recent analysis, of the second carbon tax, by the Parliamentary Budget Officer, which it says shows in 2030, when the regulations are fully implemented, will cost the average family up to $1,157 and will increase the price of gas by up to 17 cents per litre.
There are also no rebates with the second carbon tax.
The CTF also estimates Canadians will pay $429 million more this year in GST because of this tax-on-tax and the Federation says by the end of the decade, Trudeau’s two carbon taxes will increase the price of gas by about 55 cents per litre and cost the average family more than $2,000 annually.
