Superintendent Rob Lasson
Mechanical analysis has begun on both the bus and the semi truck involved in the fatal collision near Carberry, Manitoba on Thursday, but it could take weeks, if not months, to get conclusive results.
As a result of the tragic incident, 15 people on the bus were killed, and 10 more were sent to hospital. Five of them are in critical condition. They are all between the ages of 60 and 89. Manitoba RCMP Superintendent Rob Lasson says the drivers of both vehicles are alive, however the bus driver has not been spoken to by RCMP to allow time for healing. Interviews have also been conducted on the seniors in hospital, however Lasson says information collected there cannot be divulged at this time. Lasson says this investigation is difficult for many reasons, such as maintaining emotions among investigators. However, the most complex part of this investigation is determining accurate answers such as ruling out if someone was at fault.
As of Monday morning, autopsies on the 15 deceased have begun. This will not only help to identify the victims, but will provide helpful information to the investigators, and provide closure to the family. Manitoba Premiere Heather Stefanson says all family members who are affected will be reimbursed for any travel, food, or hotel costs acquired while tending to their family situation.
