Much of Saskatchewan southern and parts of central Saskatchewan have been experiencing snow and rain, but it hit the hardest in the southeast. It is expected to dissipate on Thursday. The storm has wreaked havoc on the roads, with road closures and travel not recommended. It affected the “bearpit” session at the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association convention, where the Premier and the Ministers answer questions from delegates. Only four Ministers were at the session in person on Wednesday because of the road conditions and the rest attended virtually from Regina.
The City of Saskatoon says in a news release that crews will continue applying de-icing materials on the major streets through the night. The priority while it snows is to address the icy conditions along Circle Drive and the rest of the highest speed streets, intersections and bridge decks along with plowing if the snow accumulates. Following that, are the arterial streets and bus routes. Crews will be out through the night applying salt to break the ice layer.
Since the early morning hours today (Wed), Regina Police have responded to 12 collisions, two of which resulted in minor injuries. The Regina Police Service says they can’t all be attributed to the whether, but it is extremely icy, so police are asking everyone to stay home if possible, and if you must venture out in these spring snow storm conditions, slow down and give yourself extra time, and that advice continues for the morning commute as well.
