March 20th is designated as International Day of Happiness and is the day the World Happiness Report is released which this year shows Finland again topping the list of the world’s happiest countries.
To determine the world’s happiest country, researchers analyzed comprehensive Gallup polling data from countries for the past three years, specifically monitoring performance in six particular categories: gross domestic product per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make your own life choices, generosity of the general population, and perceptions of internal and external corruption levels.
The report writers credited the citizens of Finland’s strong feelings of communal support and mutual trust with not only helping maintain their No. 1 ranking, but with helping the country as a whole navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.
Finland was followed (in order) by Denmark, Iceland, Israel and the Netherlands. New Zealand rounds out the top 10 while Australia is 12, Canada 13, Ireland 14, the United States at 15 and the U.K. at 19 makes it to the top 20.
The lowest ranking countries in the report are Afghanistan at 137 and Lebanon was 136. Rounding out the list of the five unhappiest countries in the world: Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe and Congo.
In this year’s rankings, Russia is No. 70 and Ukraine is No. 92.
