The leaders of all five major political parties accepted invitations to speak, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
There were no new announcements and a question-and-answer session with the PM did not contain overly pointed questions from the audience.
Trudeau reemphasized that the federal government—contrary to what calls “internet reports”—is not planning to regulate fertilizer use. He The plan remains reducing emission levels.
“I have heard directly from you that finding ways to use fertilizer more efficiently is important for both the sustainability and resilience of our environment and for your bottom lines,” he said.
He also addressed the challenge of growing more food with fewer inputs.
“We can’t have yields going down. We have to be increasing them. We have to make sure we not only feed Canadians, but the world.”
Trudeau also had plenty of praise for farmers saying “it’s tough work, it’s essential work and every Canadian is grateful.
Also speaking Monday at different times were Pierre Poilievre (Conservatives), Jagmeet Singh (NDP), Yves-Francois Blanchet (Bloc Quebecois) and Elizabeth May (Green Party).
