The Prime Minister and the Premiers, or the First Ministers, are meeting tomorrow (Tues)to talk about health care funding. Premier Scott Moe has said he would like the federal government’s funding to increase from 22 per cent to 35 per cent.

However, the federal government is looking for conditions for increased funding. They include committing to results on access to family health teams, reducing backlogs in surgeries and diagnostics, retaining, recruiting and recognizing the credentials of health care workers, investing in mental health, and modernizing the system so medical records can be shared with providers electronically.

When Canada’s publicly funded health care system was founded in the 1960s, costs were split 50-50, but over the years, the provinces gradually took on the larger percentage.
