The Saskatoon Blades learned first-hand that the Edmonton Oil Kings aren’t the same squad that won the W-H-L title last spring – and took advantage by rolling to a 5-1 triumph Sunday at Rogers Place.
Brandon Lisowsky snapped a 1-1 tie as the Bridge City Bunch scored on their first 5-on-3 power play chance of the season. It helped the Blue and Gold improve their season-record to 9-2-0. It was the fourth straight game in which the 18-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs’ draft pick scored a goal. Trevor Wong (pictured) tallied twice and added an assist while Rowan Calvert and Conner Roulette closed out the Blades’ scoring. Captain and defenceman Aidan De La Gorgendiere chipped in three assists, giving him 100 career points in his Saskatoon and W-H-L career. He becomes the 141st player in franchise history to reach the century mark in points. Ben Wright had the lone reply for Edmonton, now 1-9-1 for the season and losers of six straight, the lone shot out of 32 to elude Ethan Chadwick in the contest before 3,980 fans. The lone down note for the game came just past the six-minute mark of the first period when centre Josh Pillar limped off the ice following a knee-om-knee collision with Oil Kings’ 20-year-old forward Jaxsen Wiebe. That led to plenty of chippy play, resulting in 38 minutes of penalties. The fourth of five consecutive road games for the Blades isn’t until Friday when Saskatoon visits the Medicine Hat Tigers.
