With the minimum wage officially increasing to $13 an hour on Saturday, the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour says it’s not enough, and is calling on the government to fast track their plans and immediately increase minimum wage to $15 an hour instead of waiting until 2024. SFL President Lori Johb says workers are seeing their wages eaten away by skyrocketing inflation.
She says workers can’t afford to wait. Johb points to a report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives which calculated the living wage for workers in Regina at $16.23 an hour and in Saskatoon at $16.89 an hour. The SFL believes minimum wage should match the cost of living.
