Two nights in a row in Saskatchewan there were significant storms with hail reported the size of a tennis ball in some areas. The largest hail on Saturday night was in Barrier Lake, which Environment Canada says was reported as being tennis ball sized.
Meteorologist Natalie Hazell says from their reports early this morning (Mon), which may not be a complete list, there were a series of storms last night through early this morning. First, golf ball sized hail was reported just after 6 o’clock last night southeast of Wynyard (Sun), followed by tennis ball sized hail east of that city around 6:30 and then later near Fillmore. Some areas of Regina were without power, with the first outages reported at around 12:30, followed by loonie sized hail southeast of that city, and then golf ball sized hail on Regina’s east side.
Hazell notes that tennis ball sized hail isn’t the largest ever experienced on the Prairies. About a week-and-a-half ago there was grapefruit sized hail reported in Alberta. She says a lot of time is spent talking about tornados when storm warnings are released, but severe storms can also include hail, which can also cause injury and property damage.
She advises everyone to be prepared when there is severe weather in the forecast. You can click here for some safety tips, which include having an emergency kit nearby.
