The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is calling for an extension to the due date, for the Federal Indian Day School Class Action Lawsuit claim. Right now it sits at July 13th.
FSIN Vice Chief Aly Bear says survivors were not given enough time to apply for their claim and they haven’t been given enough help to fill out the forms and work through this emotional process.
Through the Class Action lawsuit of McLean versus Canada, survivors are seeking recognition and compensation for the harms infliction to them and to their families.
In 2009, the late Garry McLean started this lawsuit.
He attended a Day School at Lake Manitoba First Nation.
The FSIN also contends there hasn’t been enough legal advice given to these survivors.
In March of 2019, the $1.27-billion Indian Day School settlement was announced and it was estimated about 200,000 survivors could apply.
