Phantom Light Distillery, a Saskatchewan company which gets its name from the legend around a strange light moving up and down an old abandoned rail line at night, took home a platinum award for its vodka at the annual Sip Awards which is an international spirits competition.
Brendan Miller is one of the partners of the distillery which is based out of Prince Albert and says their goal is to have consistency from here on in.
“We think we’ve dialed it in and we just want to stay that course ’cause we truly believe we have one of the cleanest tasting vodkas on the market today.”
Miller says winning the award has been the result of pushing themselves to a high standard.
He explained at one point in time, they had to pull some their products off the market because some had a peppery aftertaste, and others had a flowery aftertaste but what they have created now is something that is exceptionally smooth.
“We beat out some amazing vodkas that have been on the market for a long time. So we’re super stoked about it. The phone hasn’t stopped ringing since. Just the whole gamut of people wanting to talk and know more about us and all that kind of stuff so it’s been a whirlwind couple of days here.”
In reference to the name, Phantom Light Distillery, the legend of the light on the abandoned rail line was featured in the television show Unsolved Mysteries and in 2014 Canada Post issued a stamp depicting the St. Louis ghost train, one of a series of five depicting Canadian ghost tales.
