The mission of the Embracing Life Initiative is to reduce suicide in northern Saskatchewan by working with communities through health promotion, suicide prevention, and intervention. One way the organization is doing this is through the Embracing Life app, which is geared towards youth and young adults, but co-chair Linda Cairns says it’s really something anyone can use.

The app asks you questions about how you are feeling and gives you the opportunity to check in daily with your struggles and also what you are grateful for. Then, when you are particularly challenged, you open up the virtual gratitude box which can include videos, pictures and text. For those struggling with mental health issues, the app can also lead you to local resources if you feel you need more help.

It’s also for friends and family of those who are struggling, giving advice on how to approach them and what questions to ask. Cairns says one mother commented recently that after her thirteen year old downloaded the app, she was able to help a twelve year old that same day. Although the goal is suicide prevention, Cairns suggests the app can be used by anyone to journal their thoughts and challenges. This is National Mental Health Week.
