Damage is estimated at $200,000 and a family of five managed to escape a house fire in the 100 block of Shaftsbury Place early this morning in Saskatoon’s Meadowgreen neighbourhood.

The Saskatoon Fire Department got the call at 2:14 a.m. and when they arrived were greeted by smoke showing from a four-level-split home.

Five people in the home had evacuated and were in their backyard after one of the parents, who saw fire visible in the living room, jumped out the window, grabbed a ladder and evacuated the rest of the family. Utilities were shut off and the fire was under control by 2:43 a.m.

The cause of the fire was accidental due to an overloaded electrical circuit serving a six plug multi-power block. The fire originated at an electrical outlet in the living room. In addition, no working smoke alarms were identified in the home. Fire officials say two adults and three children were lucky to escape with light smoke inhalation.
