The Saskatoon Police Service Economic Crime Section has received multiple reports recently of scams targeting night staff at retail stores and businesses. The scammers call the night staff and convince them that their store manager has authorized a shipment or payment of some sort, and that the payment is needed immediately.
Police say the scammers may claim to be calling from corporate headquarters and threaten the business will close if payment isn’t made immediately. The payment requested is gift cards or Bitcoin.
The Police Service reminds businesses that all staff should confirm any authorizations for payments with their manager, and payments requested by gift card or cryptocurrency are most likely a scam.
