Saskatchewan New Democrats are calling on the Sask Party government to provide and/or improve cell coverage for First Nations communities in the province.
The leaders of the Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation, the Meadow Lake Tribal Council and the Federation of Sovereign First Nations joined with N-D-P M-L-A’s Betty Nippi-Albright (pictured at podium) and Trent Wotherspoon to bring attention to the issue. Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation is a community of about one thousand people near Loon Lake, but does not have reliable cellular connectivity. Nippi-Albright and Wotherspoon want the Sask Party government to work with the Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation to establish safe and consistent and safe cell phone coverage with Nippi-Albright of the opinion that connectivity to cell and internet service continues to be a particular problem in Indigenous and northern communities. The N-D-P M-L-A’s also want the province to bypass on collecting a dividend from SaskTel in this year’s budget and invest it towards making cell and internet connectivity happen across Saskatchewan.
