Because of the frigid temperatures, the Saskatoon Community Foundation has fast-tracked some funding to support emergency warm-up locations in Saskatoon. CEO Carm Michalenko says the Foundation has directed $85,000 for immediate support of five organizations providing these warm-up locations and food for those experiencing poverty and inadequate shelter. They are the Central Urban Metis Federation, Inc, otherwise known as CUMFI, the Persons Living with Aids Network, the Friendship Inn, STR8 Up and the Saskatoon Tribal Council.
Michalenko says, “It is our collective responsibility to provide warm-up locations and food, and to act quickly. The foundation hopes to make a lasting impact through a legacy gift now called the Robert Steane Fund to End Homelessness, to provide housing and wrap-around services.
