The goal of a collaboration between the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations and the Saskatoon Industry Education Council is to make the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math more accessible and more inviting to learn for First Nations students across the province.
The SIEC has a program called SaskCode which equips teachers with the technological skills and the tools needed to learn about computers and learn coding.
They also use robotics to help in the learning process, which the SIEC believes makes learning more enticing.
Third Vice-Chief, Edward “Dutch” Lerat says, “Our First Nations children are our most important resource and by working collaboratively with SIEC, our goal is to enhance our educational system with skills and tools that will provide more opportunity for students.”
The Memorandum of Understanding is for five years, dependent on continued federal funding for the SaskCode program.
