August 9th is the fifth anniversary of the death of 22 year old Colten Boushie, who was shot on Gerald Stanley’s farm near Biggar.
In 2018, Stanley was acquitted in his death, which the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations says serves as an example of systemic discrimination in the Canadian Criminal Justice System.
The FSIN Executive supports Boushie’s family in renewing the call for a public inquiry into his death.
The FSIN suggests the investigation and jury selection process were flawed as was the Crown’s decision to not appeal the verdict.
Vice Chief David Pratt says Colten Boushie can’t be forgotten, and, “We also honour his mother, Debbie Baptiste, who has shown immense courage and inspired many to stand up against injustice.”
A report released this past March from the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission, which reviewed the RCMP investigation, found officers racially discriminated against Boushie’s family.
On August 9th of 2016, Boushie was shot and killed after he and four others entered Gerald Stanley’s farmyard.
