Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a cabinet shuffle after Bill Morneau stepped down last night as Finance Minister.
Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister, says she is conscious of becoming Canada’s first female Finance Minister.
“It’s about time we broke that glass ceiling. And I’d like to say to all the Canadian women across our amazing country who are out there breaking glass ceilings, keep going.”
She also pointed out that the economic challenge created by COVID-19 is hitting Canadian women particularly hard.
“We are seeing women’s participation in the work force fall very sharply and certainly I am glad I will have the opportunity to bring my experience as a woman, as a mother, to this really important challenge the country is facing.”
Dominic LeBlanc, currently President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, will maintain that post while taking on Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs. LeBlanc also served as Intergovernmental Affairs Minister from 2018 to 2019.
And parliament is being prorogued. A Speech from the Throne will take place September 23rd. The Prime Minister’s statement says it will provide an opportunity for a vote of confidence on the government’s new plan, to be outlined when the House of Commons returns.
