Some businesses in Canada have been taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic by making deceptive marketing claims about prevention or treatment. The Competition Bureau says that includes a major national retailer, which it doesn’t name, and businesses in several provinces including Saskatchewan. There have been claims about herbal remedies, food and drink products to prevent infections, making claims about certain U-V and ozone sterilization systems, as well as air filters or purifiers said to kill or filter out the virus. The Bureau has started cracking down. Direct compliance warnings have been issued to stop the claims. The Bureau says most of the businesses have either pulled products from their shelves or have stopped the claims. Health Canada has not yet approved any product to prevent, treat or cure COVID-19. The Bureau says it will continue to monitor the situation and take action as needed.
