Long-time Chief of the Canoe Lake Cree First Nation Guy Lariviere has passed away.
Lariviere was elected Chief in 1992 and held the position for 16 years, along with 4 years served on council. The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations offered prayers and condolences, on Friday, to family, friends and the community of Canoe Lake Cree Nation. Current Canoe Lake Chief Francis Iron called Lariviere a great leader and took the opportunity to thank him for his hard work, guidance, leadership and commitment during his time as Chief and Councilor.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron says Executive, Senate and staff were truly saddened to learn of the passing of Lariviere, adding he fought hard for the recognition and the rights of his people, and he will be greatly missed.
